The larger part of this book explains the neurology and physiology relevant to yoga practice. I have argued that we need some understanding of the biomechanics of the body to avoid injury, and I have tried to explain that the breath needs to be responsive rather than controlled. I have asserted, too, that some ways of engaging with the body are better than others. I hope I have expressed these points in a way that readers can follow, but I welcome disagreement and debate.

Not all yoga is like this. There is a long-standing tradition in yoga that wisdom is passed down from guru to student, and because much of yoga’s history has been dominated by mysticism (i.e. the perception that insight can be attained through dedicated practice), there has long been a tendency for obscuring knowledge. The serious yoga student will, at some point, have to make a decision about belief – namely, whether to abandon one’s critical faculties and perception of the world and to pursue a belief that makes some big promises, a world where suffering can be transcended, where even death may be an illusion, as reflected in the ideas of karma, samskara and rebirth that permeate Hindu thought. In many cases this involves surrendering to a guru. This contrasts starkly with self-trust and the idea of developing choice and reason. In fact, belief and reason are very different and can lead us in very different directions.
